Learn how to install the Tulle Petite wall sconce step by step. This guide covers mounting, wiring, and positioning for a clean, secure finish.
Quick answer
Mount the Tulle Petite wall sconce by securing its backplate to a standard junction box, connecting the wires, and then attaching the shade. The shade can face up or down, so decide before tightening the final set screw.
Why the Tulle Petite is different to install
Unlike a rigid sconce, the Tulle Petite uses a perforated metal shade that Mathieu Matégot developed to move like fabric. This means the shade is lightweight but still sturdy. The key difference during installation is that you can rotate the shade 180° after wiring, so you are not locked into a single orientation. That flexibility also means you need to check clearance twice: once when you mark the box and again after the shade is attached.
Installation steps
- Turn off power and mark the box location: Switch off the circuit breaker for the room. Hold the Tulle Petite backplate against the wall where you want the sconce. Mark the center of the junction box through the backplate hole. Common mistake: marking the box before the backplate is level. Use a spirit level on the backplate before you mark.
- Mount the backplate to the junction box: Attach the crossbar (supplied) to the junction box with the provided screws. Thread the fixture wires through the backplate, then screw the backplate onto the crossbar. Tighten until the plate is flush against the wall. Check that the backplate does not rock. If the wall is uneven, use the adjustment slots on the crossbar to shim it.
- Connect the wiring: Match the fixture’s black wire to the house’s hot wire (black or red), white to neutral (white), and green or bare copper to ground. Twist each pair together with a wire nut and wrap with electrical tape. Tuck the wires neatly into the box. Common mistake: leaving too much wire in the box can prevent the backplate from sitting flush. Trim excess to about 4 inches (10 cm).
- Attach the shade and choose orientation: Slide the shade over the socket until it clicks into the backplate’s retention ring. Rotate the shade so the open face points up or down. Tighten the set screw on the bottom of the backplate to lock the shade in place. Decide orientation before tightening. Once the set screw is snug, the shade will not pivot without loosening it again.
- Install the bulb and test: Screw in a standard A19 or similar bulb (max 60W or equivalent LED). Restore power and flip the switch. Verify the light direction matches your plan. Check that the bulb does not protrude past the shade edge. A bulb that is too long can create a hot spot or look unfinished.
Product fact
- Tulle Petite: Mathieu Matégot spent years perforating sheet metal until it moved like fabric - he called it "Rigitulle." The Tulle Petite is a continuation of that idea, small enough for a single wall and flexible enough to face up or down. Because the shade can pivot, you can decide the light direction after the sconce is mounted. Plan for a downward-facing beam if you want task light for reading, or an upward glow for ambient fill.
